SOLAR GRATES:  Grates Explained

  • Solar Grates are a means of reducing infrared heating from sunlight, resulting in energy savings for air conditioning.

  •

  • Analogy:  Dolby Sound removes unwanted high frequency noise from sound;  Grates remove unwanted infrared from summer sunlight via SELECTIVE REFLECTIVITY.

  •

  • SELECTIVE REFLECTIVITY occurs when direct sunlight hits the Grate surface.  The infrared light portion is largely blocked from entering through the window while visible light largely reflects and passes through the window into the building.

  •

  • Grates typically use an Egg Crate structure and are installed parallel to and outside of a window usually facing South, West, or East.

  • Grates can be made from a variety of materials such as plastic, metal, or wood.

  • A frame is used for handling ease and for appearance.

  • Other products for reducing solar heat gain:  awnings, (functional) shutters, window film, solar screens, "In'Flector", low SHGC glass.
